Insurance companies typically cover individual therapy** and some cover family therapy, but most do not cover couples' therapy. Discernment Counseling, Co-Parenting Counseling, and Family Estrangement & Reconciliation are not covered.

**Insurance Coverage for Psychotherapy. I am not a provider on any insurance panels. However, if your insurance carrier provides out-of-network coverage for mental health services, I may be able to provide you with a “super bill” (receipt) for insurance reimbursement. To qualify for reimbursement you must meet the criteria for a mental health disorder and be diagnosed. Insurance benefits are NOT available for missed appointments.

I recommend that you contact your insurance company to understand the extent of coverage and the reimbursement process. Here are some questions to ask prior to your first appointment:

  1. I’m hoping to meet with a therapist who is outside of my insurance network, and I will be paying them directly. What are my out-of-network benefits? Specifically, how much of the therapist’s fee will I be reimbursed through my plan? [CPT Codes: Family therapy 90847, 90846; Individual Therapy 90834, 90837]

  2. Is there a limit to the number of sessions that will be covered?
